My choice for a life worth living
At 20 years of age, during my university years in Adelaide, I learnt about the stark realities of climate change. It was then that I recognized this crisis as the defining global issue of my lifetime. At the time, I felt lost in my career path, directionless and unfulfilled. During my search for purpose, I got two tattoos, one on each wrist, that my closest friends affectionately call my “barcodes.”
My tattoos are Trigrams of the Early Heaven Bagua, an ancient Chinese spiritual philosophy. On my right wrist, three lines symbolize Heaven, the father and penetrating force representing my spiritual power to make a difference. On my left wrist is Earth, the mother and receptive force, symbolizing my connection to nature.
In the I Ching, an ancient Chinese text of wisdom and divination, the two trigrams combine in the hexagram to symbolize the balance of Heaven below and Earth above. On my wrists, with the left above the right, this alignment of yin and yang represents the ultimate state of harmony and serenity: Peace.
After a few years of struggling at university and as a young adult, I made a life-transforming decision: I would dedicate my career to solving the climate change crisis. Though I had no idea how I would achieve this goal, I believed that striving toward it would lead to a meaningful and impactful life. I wrote in my journal “if for nothing else, a life worth living.”
Throughout my journey to discover my solution to the climate crisis, my tattoos have been a guiding light. They serve as a reminder of my true purpose and that there is always hope, even in the darkest times.
That pivotal choice, and the two-decade journey that followed, have led me to the solutions I now champion through AGContext.
The Root Cause of Climate Change
Throughout my career, spanning many technology roles, industries, and studies in sustainable practices, I have explored the intersection of climate change, technology, government, and business. My conclusion is that the root cause of climate change is the dominant ideology driving our economy and society: wealth accumulation for private interests.
This ideology, embedded in systems like capitalism and neoliberalism, prioritizes the hoarding of financial wealth by individuals above the collective well-being of people and our planet. It is this pursuit that has given rise to social inequities and environmental degradation, encapsulated in the adage: “We cannot meet the needs of the poor because we cannot satisfy the desires of the rich.”
To overcome the climate change crisis, we must transform our institutions and organizations to move away from the misguided belief that “greed is good”.
